East Stirlingshire 0-1 Elgin City

Two of Elgin's star players, Alex Bone and Hugh Dickson, joined Phil Reid on the sideline and were replaced by Jamie McKenzie, who was back from suspension, and Iain Vigurs, who made his first start for the full team.

The majority of the game was played in the air as both sides favoured the long ball tactic which had little or no effect and left both 'keepers untroubled. Neither team took control of the game until the unlikely figure of Paul Napier changed things for Elgin.

Brought on in the 65th minute for his first proper piece of first team action, the seventeen year old winger started passing the ball which prompted similar actions from his team mates.

Indeed, it was Napier who began the move which led to the corner, which he took, for the opening goal. His corner found fellow skillseeker Fraser Bremner whose header was only partially cleared by the 'Shire defence. Willie Martin laid the ball off to Dempsie on the edge of the box and the full back, playing this game on the right, was given plenty of time on the ball which he took advantage of to fire into the bottom corner.

Provider almost turned scorer in the seventy fifth minute when a long clearance from Bremner was misjudged by the East Stirlingshire defence to let Martin through on goal. The defenders recovered just in time to deflect Martin's shot off target. Adam Nelson wasted a free header from the resultant Napier corner by putting his effort wide.

Elgin had two more good chances to add a second in the last ten minutes. Martin got in behind the defence before his shot was deflected into the side netting and Paul Kaczan had a header saved on the line.
