Elgin City 1-3 Montrose

The Gable endies showed their intent early on and almost scored their first league goal of the season in the second minute. Steve Kerrigan's twenty five yard shot was parried by Kieron Renton but only into the path of Martin Wood. The former Forres and Motherwell player looked to find his strike partner Craig O'Reilly in the box but the ball was headed clear.

As seems to be the norm this season, Elgin took their time to come alive. Their first chance came in the seventeenth minute, when Andy Roddie, who was involved in almost every City chance of the afternoon, sent over an inviting cross which was headed wide by Martin Harty.

Six minutes later, Roddie set up the opener. A free kick on the left was crossed into the box and Alex Bone headed in from the back post.

Elgin almost got a second in the next minute. Fraser Bremner's deep cross was missed by everyone in the box until Roddie collected if on the far side but his shot was saved by Micheal Hankinson.

The home side's continued dominance almost paid off as they hit the woodwork twice in quick succession. A Roddie through-ball put Willie Martin clear, but his cross-goal shot came back off the post. Bone pounced on the loose ball but couldn't force it past the Montrose defence who cleared it straight to Adam Nelson, whose right footed shot also bounced off the post. Nelson tried his luck from range again but this time his shot was comfortably held by Hankinson.

Two minutes before the break, Montrose gave Elgin an indication of what was to come when Kevin Webster shot just over from one of the numerous free kicks Elgin gave away.

Elgin almost got their second through Bone early in the second half but he couldn't quite reach a centre from Bremner after good work on the wing by the youngster.

With an hour gone, and Elgin looking in control, the away side shocked Borough Briggs when they equalised. Barry Donachie and Webster linked up on the right before finding Craig Smart in the box. Smart's shot somehow found its way past his marker and underneath Renton as it hit the back of the next.

Buoyed on by this, Montrose continued to attack. Substitute Graeme Sharp forced a save from Renton before he put Montrose ahead.

Sharp closed down Renton as he came out to deal with a long ball but the keeper's attempted clearance bounced back off Sharp. As Renton appealled for handball, Sharp got on with the game and put the ball into the empty net.

Rather than simply waste time waiting for the final whistle, Montrose admirably looked for a third. Wood went forward and drew Renton from his line before squaring to Sharp, but his shot was blocked by a defender and Renton also had to save from Euan Hall.

Elgin reacted well and had two good opportunities to equalise before full time. A corner from Roddie was somehow missed by Stuart Cumming, Harty and Bone when almost any touch would've put it in and in the next minute Hugh Dickson, who had been moved up front, flicked a long ball into the path of Harty, but the former Stenny frontman failed to connect.

For those of you who left early, things then got worse for City. After failing to clear a throw in in their final third, Graeme Sharp nipped in to grab his second and Montrose's third.

After the game Phil Reid, who hears about the severity of his back injury on Monday (30th), said "I'm City 'til I die".
