With seven consecutive defeats behind them, a lively Elgin City team faced Berwick Rangers, currently sitting mid-table.
In a desperate attempt to reclaim some ground between them and every other third division team, Elgin were yet again subjected to a loss.
The home team were quick out the blocks, using their opponents four-hour bus journey to their advantage and saw Martin Johnston latch on to a through ball from midfield.
A mere five minutes into the game would have been the ideal time to take the lead, but his strike just curled wide of the post.
Twenty minutes into the first half Berwick were looking more like a team and won a free-kick out wide next to the corner flag. Robbie Horn met the inswinging ball with a firm header, forcing Elgin's Kieron Renton to cushion the ball out for a corner.
Elgin cleared their lines well, and managed to sustain a fair amount of pressure within their opponents half, the Berwick defence scrambling men in front of the ball.
An influential Mark Booth found the ball fall to his feet just outside the centre circle, and with a delicate chip over the back line of Berwick's defence, cleverly picked out Steve Mackay. With the goal gaping in front of him and only the keeper to beat, his low strike was dealt with comfortably by Berwick's Gary O'Connor.
Much to the joy, if not relief, of all City fans, an on-form Adam Moffat caught the ball on the volley from just outside the 18-yard line. Taking a rather heavy deflection, the Berwick keeper was left stranded and the ball nestled in the top corner of the net. Elgin City had a well deserved 1-0 lead thanks to this 44th minute strike.
Berwick came out undeterred in the second half and in the 49th minute Renton was tested by a fresh Dennis McLaughlin who had just replaced a struggling Grant McNicoll. This was to prove to be a wake-up call for City, as a series of continuous pressure was to follow.
It came in the form of a free-kick in the 51st minute. Once again, McLaughlin took control and his well struck free-kick found the bottom corner of the City net.
Back in the game, Berwick had turned the tables, with several Elgin City heads dropping.
The second of two came from a loose City defence, Kevin Haynes capitalised on the open gaps and slotted the ball past a helpless Renton.
After a rather dull last 30 minutes, dominated by Berwick, Elgin City put in one last push but it was too little to late.
Berwick had sealed their victory and headed off home, leaving Elgin to pick up the pieces once again.
