In a scrappy affair at Borough Briggs, East Fife left Elgin City still looking for their first home win.

The visitors started the strongest and nearly took the lead inside three minutes when Stuart Noble's shot was deflected wide by Stuart Cumming.

A matter of minutes later Elgin created a chance of their own when an Alan Muir cross was headed narrowly over by Paul Kaczan.

After seven minutes East Fife took a deserved lead. The ball broke to Craig Smart on the edge of the box, and his stunning 20-yard drive beat Kieron Renton.

Elgin then picked themselves up but couldn't convert a number of good chances, which left under-pressure manager Davie Robertson looking frustrated.

Elgin started the second half brightly and were unlucky not to equalise through Martin Johnstone's 47th minute effort.

The home side's missed chances proved costly as East Fife doubled their lead in the 49th minute. Stuart Cumming delayed on the ball, which let substitute Stephen Fortune in. His shot was well saved by Renton, but John Bradford was on hand to smash home the rebound.

This seemed to waken up Elgin, and it took them only nine minutes to reply. Good wing play by Alan Muir set up Johnstone for him to notch his third of the season.

Elgin youngster Garry Wood had two chances in two minutes but failed to convert. The final chance of the match fell to Johnstone, but his header was superbly saved by keeper John Dodds.

The full-time whistle was blown, but applause from the home support for Davie Robertson and Kenny Black shows the fans are still firmly behind the management duo.
