Elgin City 2 Queens Park 2

It was the old cliche of a game of two halves as Elgin City entertained Queens Park today at Bourgh Briggs.

Elgin were clearly up for this match, and it took them only four minutes to test the Queens defence. A long punt up the Park by City goalie Kieron Renton was pounced apon by Martin Johnstone, but his shot failed to trouble the keeper and flew inches over the bar.

Twenty-two minutes later Johnstone opened his league account with a well-taken turn and hit from the edge of the area after a Pat Scullion pass found the big striker.

Two minutes later Elgin doubled their lead after former Hibs full-back Alan Dempsie launched a through ball towards Mark Booth, who rounded the keeper to finish into an empty net. By this point Elgin were in cruise control and were playing some wonderful passing play to the delight of the home support.

Elgin started the second half as they finished the first, and in the 62nd minute nearly added to their lead when centre-back Hugh 'Shuggy' Dickson's 25-yard shot went inches wide of the left-hand post.

Queens Park refused to lie down, and in the 70th minute were unfortunate not to pull a goal back after a Ross Clark cross was met by the head of Steve Reilly, but his effort was saved by Renton.

We had to wait untill the 80th minute for the next chance, and it proved to be decisive. A Johnny Whelan flick-on wasn't cleared by the City defence, and David Weatherston was on hand to volley home from six yards.

This spurred The Spiders to show good 'bouncebackability' and in the 85th minute the comeback was complete when a through ball found Weatherston and Dickson was forced to make a clumsy challenge and the penalty was awarded. Captain Reilly kept his cool to convert from the spot.

Another depressing day for Davie Robertson and Kenny Black as City are still without their first win of the campaign.
