Elgin held on to fourth place in Division Three with a hard-fought victory over Montrose which keeps them just ahead of Queens Park and Arbroath in the battle for a play-off place.

Elgin got off to a great start with a goal after seven minutes. Martin Johnston was judged to have been fouled by keeper Sandy Wood and Mark Booth scored from the spot.

Montrose hit back and after 12 minutes a fierce drive from Kevin Webster was saved by Kieron Renton.

At the other end a run by Stuart Cumming ended with a shot which was turned for a corner by Wood.

Montrose appealed for a penalty of their own on 37 minutes when a shot from Hugh Davidson appeared to strike the hand of David Hind.

Montrose equalised in the 41st minute when Steven Kerrigan headed the ball down and Calum Watson hammered a shot home.

Montrose were almost in the lead two minutes later when Kerrigan just failed to connect with a Watson cross.

Montrose continued to battle in the second half and might have taken the lead after 58 minutes when Kerrigan headed the ball down and Greig Henslee crashed in a shot which was tipped for a corner by Renton.

After 65 minutes Watson broke on the right and cut the ball back to Henslee who seemed poised to score until a defender got back to clear.

It was Elgin who took the lead in the 72nd minute when Jamie McKenzie sent in a free- kick which was stabbed home by Paul Kaczan. Two minutes later Montrose were reduced to 10 men when Kerrigan was sent off for a second booking.

Elgin wrapped up the points five minutes from time when Kaczen headed a McKenzie corner over goalkeeper Wood and then followed up to head the ball into the empty net.
