Montrose closed to within two points of Elgin by recording a deserved victory against them.

Montrose opened the scoring after 16 minutes when Martin Wood slipped the ball to Craig Smart who side-footed home.

The same partenership almost worked again after 23 minutes when Wood headed forward to Smart, but he shot wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Elgin ought to have been level after 28 minutes when a drive from Martin Harty was deflected into the path of Paul Kaczan, who hit the post when it seemed easier to score.

Montrose began the second half well and Smart shot wide from good position. Then Graeme Sharp went on a run and his shot was saved by the keeper.

Montrose made it 2-0 after 70 minutes when Wood collected a Craig O'Reilly pass and scored from an angle.

Montrose looked for more and after 79 minutes Calum Watson had a snap shot saved.

A minute from time Elgin were reduced to 10 men when Stuart Cumming flattened Kevin Webster and was sent off.

Montrose almost added a third in stoppage time when Watson went on a strong run and his drive was tipped over by the keeper
