Montrose climbed the league with an emphatic 2-0 victory over Elgin.

Elgin started brightly and after six minutes Martin Johnstone had a shot turned for a corner by Andy Reid. From the corner, taken by Paul Napier, Hugh Dickson had a header saved by Reid.

Montrose opened the scoring after 13 minutes when Steven Kerrigan released Kevin Webster on the right and his cross was slammed high into the net by Greg Henslee.

After 24 minutes keeper Kieron Renton did well to save a defeat of Euan Hall. Ten minutes later Henslee knocked the ball down and Hall had a low drive saved by Renton.

Right on half-time Pat Scullion missed a good chance to equalise for Elgin.

Montrose stretched their lead after 61 minutes when a Martin Fotheringham corner was knocked goalwards by Paul Doyle and Kerrigan poked the ball home.

Montrose looked for a third, and after 81 minutes Kerrigan dived to head wide from a Webster cross.

After 86 minutes a drive from Iain Vigurs forced a great save from keeper Reid. In stoppage time Fotheringham sent in a cross and Webster had a close-range header saved by Renton.

Seconds later Steven Fraser broke on to a Fotheringham pass and shot just over the crossbar.

Elgin were denied a consolation right on the final whistle when substitute Martin Jack just failed to connect with a Napier cross.
