Peterhead 2-1 Elgin City

Former City defender Craig Tully clearly used his arm to control the ball in the box but the referee ignored the incident which led to Elgin's first league defeat of the season.

Peterhead took the lead in the 24th minute when they were awarded a free kick just outside the box. Martin Bavidge fired in a shot which took a huge deflection in the wall, wrong footing Kieron Renton before rolling into the net.

Prior to this, both sides came close to opening the scoring. Keith Gibson headed marginally over for Peterhead and Alex Bone sent a twenty yard drive inches wide after being set up by Phil Reid.

Elgin had a great chance to equalise soon after Bavidge's goal. Allan Dempsie crossed into the box from the left, Reid helped it on to Martin Harty but Paul Mathers blocked his close range shot.

Five minutes later, Peterhead scored again. Bavidge ran down the left and lobbed the ball over Renton. The ball bounced off the post and kindly into the path of Scott Michie who had no preblem finding the net.

The home side had several chances to increase their lead before half time. Bavidge rounded Renton but his shot was cleared behind by Hugh Dickson and Allan Youngson curled a shot wide from outside the box.

Straight after the break Harty almost scored from an Andy Roddie corner, but his half volley was saved by a diving Mathers.

Elgin's goal came in the 54th minute from another Roddie corner. Dickson lost his marker in the box before powering a header beyond the Peterhead 'keeper.

Peterhead looked to hit back immediately and only a string of fine saves from Renton kept Elgin in the game. A point black stop to deny Iain Good, an excellent flying dive to save Gibson's thirty yard effort, a brave block from Bavidge and a David Hagen shot was tipped over the bar, all boosted confidence as City pushed for an equaliser.

However, it wasn't to be. Another Roddie cross was narrowly missed by Dickson and Harty before the former Peterhead man looked to have set up Willie Martin but Martin ended up stretching to get a shot in and missed the target.

And yes, they do still play that annoying three second soundbyte whenever Peterhead score.
